About Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive degenerative brain disorder that gradually destroys a person’s memory and ability to learn, reason, make judgments, communicate and carry out daily activities. As the disease progresses, patients may experience changes in personality and behavior, and suffer from anxiety, agitation, delusions or hallucinations.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common dementia among older adults. In the United States, more than 5 million people suffer from Alzheimer’s disease, with that number expected to grow to 14 million by 2050. Five drugs, with combined sales of approximately $5 billion, are approved in the U.S. to treat Alzheimer’s disease. However, these drugs have modest effect and are not believed to modify the underlying disease. There remains a significant unmet medical need in Alzheimer’s disease.
