The patent attorney or agent will have the skills necessary to thrive in a small company environment, as well as the ability to multitask, organize, and effectively integrate legal and scientific knowledge to provide effective counsel. Particularly important skills include intelligence, logical thinking, ability to prioritize, “can-do” attitude, the ability to adapt quickly to changing business conditions, and strong interpersonal and team building skills. The compensation package for this position will be competitive, and consist of base salary, annual bonus opportunity, stock options and a comprehensive benefits package. This position will report to the Senior Director of Intellectual Property.
Essential functions include but are not limited to the following:
- Prepare and prosecute patent applications (U.S. and foreign) in all aspects of pharmaceutical technologies e.g. small molecule and medicinal chemistry, formulations and combination therapies, with little or no supervision
- Provide, or assist with, counsel and advice to clients for patentability, freedom to operate, infringement and validity matters
- Monitor and analyze competitive intellectual property, identify scientific and technical issues potentially impacting IP strategies
- Assist in managing collaboration IP, litigation support and IP related transactional work
- Special projects on a case-by-case basis
- A minimum of 3 years experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry as a Patent Agent or Patent Attorney with highly developed skills in patent preparation and prosecution of small molecule and medicinal chemistry applications and advising clients on patentability, freedom to operate, infringement and validity matters
- Licensed to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office; a JD degree and transactional experience are a plus
- Solid understanding and advanced knowledge of organic chemistry and the various disciplines involved in developing a small molecule drug from concept to commercialization; an advanced degree in chemistry, or a related field is essential
- Strong patent database searching skills are desirable
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, and ability to integrate legal and scientific knowledge and to provide effective counsel to in-house clients
- Ability to interact effectively and work well in a cross-functional team
